Nan Jung's bond with Japan did not begin with a signing ceremony. It began with a boy who studied there, and grew, spring by spring, into one of the longest school friendships between the two countries.
It began with a mentor
Founder Chen Yao-huo had studied at Toyokuni Gakuen in Kyushu. From 1983, the two schools began visiting one another every two years; in 1992 the founder himself led a delegation of Nan Jung teachers back to Toyokuni, and in 1999 Toyokuni's chairman brought twenty staff to Kanding. A friendship that started in one man's student days had become a friendship between two schools.
A new chapter — Tokyo and Sakura
In 2001, Yuji Arai, head of Tokyo International Gakuen, visited Nan Jung for the first time. Six springs later, in May 2007, he returned with the students of Sakura High School — and the two schools signed a formal sister-school agreement, with Pingtung's deputy magistrate looking on. From that day, a delegation has crossed the sea every single spring.
Often a hundred or more students and teachers come each May, led for many years by Arai Yuji — the partner school's name evolving over time into Sakura Kokusai High School. Nan Jung's own students travel the other way too, on study tours to Nagano, Tokyo and beyond. Each visit is filled with music, homestays and shared culture; by evening, Taiwanese and Japanese students are often singing on the same stage.
More than two schools
The friendship has opened the whole of Japan to Kanding. In 2005, the world-famous Ondekoza drummers performed on the Nan Jung field — the township's very first international concert, and a night the whole community still remembers. Over the years have come a marimba ensemble from Hiroshima, wind bands from Saitama and Shimane, video link-ups and shared "Art Mile" projects with Japanese middle schools. A single bond, faithfully kept, has carried the world to a small school in the south.

← Back南榮と日本の絆は、調印式から始まったのではありません。日本で学んだ一人の少年から始まり、春また春と重ねるうちに、両国でも有数の長い校際の友情へと育っていきました。
一人の恩師から
創立者・陳耀火は、九州の豊国学園で学びました。1983年から、両校は2年ごとに相互訪問を始めます。1992年には創立者自らが南榮の教員団を率いて豊国を再訪し、1999年には豊国の理事長が20名の教職員とともに崁頂を訪れました。一人の少年の学生時代に芽生えた友情は、やがて二つの学校の友情になっていったのです。
新たな章 — 東京とさくら
2001年、東京国際学園の荒井裕司学園長が、初めて南榮を訪れました。それから六度目の春、2007年5月、荒井学園長は櫻花高校の生徒たちとともに再来し、両校は正式に姉妹校の盟約を結びました。屏東県の副県長も列席しました。その日から、毎年欠かさず、春になると訪問団が海を渡ってくるようになりました。
毎年5月には、しばしば100名を超える師弟が訪れ、長年、荒井裕司学園長が率いてこられました。相手校の名はやがて「さくら国際高等学校」へと変わります。南榮の生徒たちも逆に海を渡り、長野や東京への遊学に出かけます。どの訪問も、音楽とホームステイと文化交流に満ち、夕暮れには台日の生徒が同じ舞台で歌っていることも少なくありません。
二つの学校を越えて
この友情は、崁頂に日本そのものへの扉を開きました。2005年には、世界的に名高い「鬼太鼓座」が南榮の運動場で演奏——郷にとって初めての国際公演であり、地域の人々が今も語り継ぐ一夜となりました。年を追って、広島のマリンバ・アンサンブル、埼玉や島根の管楽団、日本の中学校とのビデオ交流や共同の「アートマイル」計画が続きます。一つの絆を誠実に守りつづけることが、南の小さな学校に、世界を運んできたのです。
