In a farming township far from any city, Nan Jung built a small piece of the wider world — and opened its doors to every child who wanted to step inside.
A gift, and a vision
In 2007, Sun Ching-kuo of the Kings Car Education Foundation came to Nan Jung and made a promise: he would help this rural school build an International English Village. A year later, in May 2008, the ribbon was cut — the first English Village in all of southern Taiwan. He would later call it "the most cost-effective, most effective English Village" he had seen.
A world to step into
Inside, English is not a subject to be memorized but a world to move through — lifelike settings where students order, ask, greet and explore in English as naturally as breathing. American volunteers have staffed it year-round, and over the years more than a hundred thousand visits have been made — by Nan Jung's own students, by neighboring schools from across the south, and by children from the community.
Recognized at the highest level
In 2010, Taiwan's First Lady, Chow Mei-ching, came to see the village for herself. It has hosted English character camps and holiday programs for children from far beyond Kanding. And in the same spirit, Nan Jung later added a Japanese Village — so that the school's friends across the sea, too, might find a familiar world waiting on its campus.

ある申し出と、一つの願い
2007年、金車文教基金会の孫慶国氏が南榮を訪れ、一つの約束をしました。この田舎の学校が「国際英語村」をつくるのを助けよう、と。翌2008年5月、テープが切られました——南台湾で初めての英語村です。のちに彼は、これを「最も費用対効果が高く、最も成果のある英語村」と評しました。
足を踏み入れる「世界」
中では、英語は暗記する「科目」ではなく、その中を歩いていく「世界」です。実物さながらの空間で、生徒たちは英語で注文し、たずね、あいさつし、探検します——まるで呼吸をするように自然に。米国のボランティアが通年で常駐し、これまでにのべ10万人以上が訪れました。南榮の生徒、南部各地の近隣校、そして地域の子どもたち。
最高のかたちで認められて
2010年には、台湾の総統夫人・周美青女史が、自らこの村を見に訪れました。英語村は、崁頂をはるかに越えた地域の子どもたちのために、英語の品格キャンプや長期休みのプログラムを開いてきました。そして同じ精神で、南榮はのちに「日本語村」も設けます——海の向こうの友もまた、キャンパスに用意された懐かしい世界に出会えるように。
