It began on an open field in a farming township. A quarter-century later, the Nan Jung marching band stood before Taiwan's Presidential Office — the first junior-high band ever to play at the nation's National Day.
A band born in 1998
In 1998 the school formed a band of some two hundred students — and chose the most demanding art of all: the outdoor marching band, where music, marching and ever-shifting formations must come together at once, on the open field. For more than two decades it has been led by conductor Chuang Feng-wu, a former chief of the ROC Navy Band, with resident teacher Hsu Ya-mei.
A habit of winning
From its first national grand prize in 2007, the band has taken the top "Excellence" in the national outdoor-marching competition again and again — in 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019 and beyond. Along the way it has played for the opening of Pingtung Airport, led thousand-strong street parades, and performed amid the colored rice paddies of the Pingtung Tropical Expo.
Beyond Taiwan
The band's music has carried it across borders. Its very first overseas tour, in 2000, took it to Singapore and Malaysia. In 2012 it earned silver at Hong Kong's international youth marching awards; and in 2014, under conductor Chuang Feng-wu, it won the junior-school championship at Malaysia's international marching band competition.

Before the Presidential Office
Then, in October 2025, came the honor of a lifetime. The Nan Jung marching band became the first junior-high school ever invited to perform at Taiwan's National Day celebration, on the plaza before the Presidential Office in Taipei. One hundred and five students — led by conductor Chuang Feng-wu and Principal Wu Shu-hui — wove wind music, dance and flag into a tribute to their homeland and to Pingtung's many-cultured spirit. It was proof of a simple thing: that a small rural school, faithful to its art, can carry its children all the way to the nation's grandest stage.

海を越えて
楽団の音楽は、国境をも越えていきます。最初の海外公演は2000年、シンガポールとマレーシアへ。2012年には香港の国際青少年マーチング大会で銀賞を、2014年には莊峰武先生の指揮のもと、マレーシアの国際マーチングバンド大会で中学の部優勝を果たしました。

総統府の前で
そして2025年10月、生涯に一度の栄誉が訪れます。南榮の行進管楽団は、台湾の国慶節の式典に招かれた史上初の中学校となりました。台北の総統府前広場の舞台です。105名の生徒が——莊峰武指揮と呉淑惠校長に率いられ——管楽と舞踊と旗の演技を織りなし、郷土への愛と、屏東の多彩な文化への誇りを捧げました。それは一つの素朴な真実の証でした。芸に誠実な小さな田舎の学校が、子どもたちを国家最大の舞台にまで連れていける、という。
