A small "substitute" junior high in a rice-field township — and yet its graduates have gone on to the country's top universities and to research labs around the world. Ask them what Nan Jung gave them, and many answer with the very same words: it was "the place where my life turned."
From math 31 to a physicist
Tung Yu-chen arrived at Nan Jung as a boy who loved mathematics but had stopped wanting to go to school — his math score was 31, and his confidence was gone. The school saw his gift, rebuilt his belief in himself, and nurtured his science while patiently shoring up his Chinese and English. (Principal Chen Chun-shih once said, with a smile, "If it will improve his Chinese, he may even read Jin Yong's martial-arts novels.")
From there his path opened: a place in a science-and-math gifted class, recommended admission to National Taiwan University's Department of Physics, and a doctorate by the age of twenty-eight. On a full scholarship from Japan he carried out neutrino research at the Tsukuba national laboratory and at Daya Bay, and published in the world-renowned journal Physical Review Letters. In the NTU physics graduate exam he scored 98 in physics and 90 in math — where a typical successful candidate scored around 40.
"It was because I came to Nan Jung — this place where my life turned — that everything after became possible. I am simply grateful."「南榮という、人生が変わったこの場所に来たからこそ、その後のすべてが可能になりました。ただただ、感謝です。」
"You can do it"
His younger brother, Tung Yi, once scored near the bottom of the national basic-competency test. He went on to pass his doctoral candidacy exam in first place at the age of twenty-six, to his advisor's high praise — and was admitted to five different PhD programs. In a letter to Chairwoman Chen Chun-wan, who had been his academic dean, he wrote that her encouragement had become the force that carried him:
"To a boy with poor grades and no confidence, you said again and again: 'You can do it — as long as you try, you certainly can.' That earnest face and those words became my driving force, and left me no excuse to give up."「成績が悪く自信のなかった私に、先生は何度も『あなたならできる、努力すれば必ずできる』と言ってくださった。その真剣な顔と言葉が、私の原動力になりました。」
A priceless treasure
Lü Yi-ting went from Nan Jung to National Chengchi University's finance program, and then to the University of Missouri, earning master's degrees in statistics and economics and a doctorate in financial planning — winning scholarships every step of the way. Returning home one cool Friday evening to watch the school's annual arts performance, she asked herself what, after all, Nan Jung had given her. Watching the dancers and listening to the music, she found her answer: a spirit of solidarity, and the grace to give thanks in applause and to let go under criticism.

Bloom on life's fertile soil
Chen Chi-wen read law at National Chengchi University, went on to graduate school at National Taiwan University, and passed the bar to become a lawyer. Whether by the Love River in Kaohsiung, along the streams of Chengchi, or beneath the palms of NTU, she grew only more certain of one thing: Nan Jung was the school that shaped her most deeply, the one that laid her upright character. Her advice to those who follow is simple.
"Hold fast to your three years at Nan Jung and cultivate yourself well — only then will your life's fertile soil bloom and bear fruit."「南榮での三年をしっかりと握りしめ、自分をよく耕すこと。そうしてこそ、人生という沃土に花が咲き、実を結ぶのです。」
They are the children of a school in a rice field — proof, each of them, that where a life begins need not decide where it arrives.

数学31点から、物理学者へ
董育宸は、数学が好きでありながら、学校へ行く気力を失っていた少年として南榮にやって来ました。数学の点数は31点、自信もすっかり失われていました。学校は彼の才能を見抜き、自分を信じる心を立て直し、理数を伸ばしながら、国語と英語を根気よく支えました。（陳純適校長は、ほほえみながらこう言ったといいます。「彼の国語が伸びるなら、金庸の武俠小説を読んでもいい。」）
そこから道は開けます。理数の英才クラスへ、推薦で国立台湾大学物理学科へ、そして二十八歳で博士号。日本からの全額奨学金を得て、筑波の国立研究所と大亜湾でニュートリノの研究を行い、世界的な学術誌〈Physical Review Letters〉に論文を発表しました。台湾大学物理大学院の試験では、物理98点・数学90点——合格者の平均が40点ほどのなかでの、群を抜く成績でした。

「あなたなら、できる」
弟の董奕は、かつて全国学力テストで最下位近くの成績でした。やがて二十六歳で博士課程の資格試験に首席で合格し、指導教授から高い評価を受け、五つの博士課程に合格しました。教務主任だった陳純婉理事長への手紙で、彼はその励ましこそが自分を支えた力だったと綴っています。

呂伊婷は南榮から国立政治大学の財政学科へ進み、さらにミズーリ大学で統計学と経済学の修士号、そして財務計画の博士号を取得しました——その道のりのすべてで奨学金を勝ち取りながら。ある涼しい金曜の夜、故郷に戻って学校の「藝術公演」を観ながら、彼女は自らに問いました。南榮は、結局、自分に何をくれたのか。舞いを見つめ、音楽に耳をかたむけるうち、答えが見つかります。それは団結の精神であり、拍手のなかで感謝を知り、非難のなかで手放すことを学ぶ、その心でした。

陳琦文は国立政治大学で法律を学び、国立台湾大学の大学院へ進み、司法試験に合格して弁護士となりました。高雄・愛河のほとりでも、政治大学の渓のほとりでも、台湾大学の椰子並木の下でも、彼女はただ一つのことをいよいよ確信していきます——南榮こそ、自分をもっとも深く形づくり、まっすぐな人格の礎を据えてくれた学校だ、と。後に続く者への助言は、ごくシンプルです。
