A painting brought to life on stage, an art-history board game, and a chance to draw a hundred years of Qingshui — three ways into the world of art.

Stepping Into a Painting

KangLang's teachers and students were invited by the Yushan Foundation to join Art Play, an education programme designed by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. The day began with a guided tour of the life of Taiwanese master painter Lin Yu-shan and his classic work, Memories of My Old Garden.

In a clever touch, the museum used a small theatre performance to make the flat painting “three-dimensional.” Led by the actors, the students were amazed to discover that a painting is not just layers of colour — it holds the depth of foreground, middle ground, and distance.

“A painting is not just colour. It is a place you can walk into.”

A Board Game and a Pair of Scissors

Next came a lively art board game, where students became art detectives, travelling among works from different periods of Taiwanese art. Through play, they learned to read colour and composition. After lunch came the creative part: following Lin Yu-shan's spirit of recording his old garden, the children used cutting, pasting, and drawing to record Qingshui, their own hometown — from the prehistoric Niumatou site to Ziyun Temple and the old Japanese-era buildings.

Our deepest thanks to the Yushan Foundation and the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts for giving village children the chance to step beyond the textbook — and to plant, in their hearts, a love for their hometown.
