A Tour of Russia,
Guided by an Older Friend

An eighth-grade student from Russia — only two years older than us — confidently introduced her country in English: its faith and festivals, its food and clothing, and a string of breathtaking landmarks.

Landmarks That Tell a Story

In this exchange, an eighth grader from Russia introduced us sixth graders to her country's culture — its religion, traditional clothing, home cooking, and famous buildings. What impressed us most were the landmarks: the grand Kremlin, the towering Motherland Calls statue, the cliff-top Swallow's Nest castle, the elegant Catherine Palace, and the Main Cathedral of the Russian Armed Forces, now a museum.

Each building was not only beautiful to look at but full of history. Through her lively introduction, it felt as if we had set off on a journey through a faraway land.

The Courage to Speak

After the presentation, we eagerly asked our own questions, and she answered each one patiently. Through this two-way exchange we learned things no textbook could teach us.

Most of all, we admired her courage. Only two years older, she stood in front of students far away in Taiwan and spoke with confidence. We hope that one day we too can share so bravely on an international stage.

“One day, I hope to speak as bravely as she did.”
