A campus that feels like a small forest.

Dahu Elementary was founded in 1960 and is one of the smallest schools in Hsinchu City — its campus covers just 0.34 hectares, small enough that visitors often describe it as feeling like a small forest rather than a school. That intimacy shapes its entire approach: the school's guiding vision is to "keep a green seed in your heart, be a nature-practicing citizen," expressed through a distinctive "Travel-Reading the Land" curriculum that takes students out into the surrounding community and mountains on foot and by bicycle. With only about 54 students across 6 classes and 13 teachers, it is a genuinely small, place-based school in the hills of southern Xiangshan.

🌲 A Campus Like a Small Forest

At just 0.34 hectares, Dahu's campus is among the smallest in Hsinchu City — intimate, green, and shaped as much by its surrounding trees as by its buildings.

🚲 "Travel-Reading the Land"

A signature curriculum sends students out on foot and by bicycle to explore the community and nearby mountains — learning geography and ecology firsthand rather than from a textbook.

🌱 "A Green Seed in Your Heart"

The school's guiding vision — to raise "nature-practicing citizens" — runs through everything from its curriculum to its use of the surrounding forested land.

Local Culture ·

Xiangshan, Hsinchu's coastal Minnan heartland.

🦪

Xiangshan District is Hsinchu City's coastal district, long shaped by Minnan fishing and oyster-farming traditions nearer the shore, while its southern hills — where Dahu Elementary sits — are given over to forest and farmland. The district's historic "mother school," Xiangshan Elementary, was founded in 1908 through the philanthropy of a local gentry family. See the Hsinchu City county page for more on the region.
