The school a private villa made possible.

Xiangshan Elementary was founded on June 20, 1908 — two years before the Republic of China itself — under the name Niupu Public School Its very existence traces back to one act of local generosity: village elder Chen Yun-ju lent his private villa, "靜山居," to serve as the school's original building. Chen went on to donate land and raise funds for new school buildings in 1917, and the school moved to its current site in 1919. It took its present name, Hsinchu City Xiangshan District Xiangshan Elementary School, on February 1, 2002. Over more than 110 years of history, Xiangshan gave rise to two of the district's other schools — Dazhuang Elementary, independent since 1955, and Hulin Elementary, independent since 1958 — making it the historic root of much of Xiangshan's school network. Today it fields four varsity teams: archery, baseball, basketball, and recorder ensemble.

Xiangshan, Hsinchu's coastal Minnan heartland.

🦪

Xiangshan District is Hsinchu City's coastal district, long shaped by Minnan fishing and oyster-farming traditions and fringed by tidal wetlands. Xiangshan Elementary is the historic root of that heritage in the classroom: founded in 1908 through one gentry family's private philanthropy, it became the "mother school" from which several of the district's neighborhood elementary schools — including Dazhuang and Hulin — eventually grew independent. See the Hsinchu City county page for more on the region.
