A Camp That Never Stayed in One Country

For three weeks this July, KangLang's summer break looked nothing like summer break usually looks. Every weekday morning, a group of our students walked through the same front gate they use during the school year — and stepped into a classroom that spent its mornings in California, its afternoons debating how to feed a hungry planet, and its evenings (metaphorically) rehearsing a stage adaptation of The Lion King.

The Immersive English Summer Camp, led by Teacher Edward and Teacher Kylie, was built around a simple bet: that children learn a language fastest when the language is simply how the room happens to be running that day. So English was not a subject with a start and end time. It was the medium for reading five classic picture books, for arguing about Yosemite National Park and Disneyland, for building paper towers, and — three weeks later — for standing under stage lights.

“Not an English class with a summer camp attached — a summer camp that happened to run entirely in English.”

Seventeen Goals, Told by Ten-Year-Olds

Rather than lecture our campers about the United Nations' seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, Teacher Edward and Teacher Kylie handed the SDGs to the children themselves — two or three goals a day, taught through vocabulary, drawing, and group discussion, and finished off with a full role-play of a Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Taiwan, the real youth forum recognised by the UNFCCC's official youth constituency, YOUNGO.

Campers built posters, held plush mascots representing the goals — including Taiwan's own black bear, dressed for the occasion — and sat for a group photo in front of the ROC and US flags, holding signs that could have come straight out of an actual climate conference. It is, as far as a summer English camp goes, an unusually ambitious way to teach the word “sustainable.”

How the Three Weeks Were Built

One Theme a Week

Week 1 · Jul 1–3

America, Up Close

Orientation, classroom rules, and an icebreaker gave way to American Culture class — Yosemite National Park, Disneyland's California Adventure Park, and a day in the life of an American school. Reading began with Five Little Ducks, alongside the first five SDGs: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health, Quality Education, and Gender Equality.

Week 2 · Jul 6–10

Building the Show 打造這場公演

Daily PE, daily dance rehearsal, and the first read-throughs of a bilingual Lion King stage adaptation and English Drama. Reading moved on to Brown Bear, Brown Bear and The Wheels on the Bus, while SDGs 6–10 — clean water, clean energy, decent work, industry & infrastructure, and reduced inequalities — framed the classroom discussions.

Week 3 · Jul 13–17

Presenting to the World 向世界報告

Our “Youth Climate Action” and “Urban Architect” teams tackled SDGs 11–17 — from sustainable cities and climate action to peace, justice, and global partnership — then staged their own mock youth climate conference. Reading closed with Dear Zoo and Dear Moon, drama moved into full recording, and the camp ended on Closing Ceremony, July 17.
