Yunhai Elementary School began in 1920 as a detached classroom of Shiding Public School (石碇公學校小格頭分離教室), located in the mountain village of Getou (小格頭) on the old Beiyi Highway. The school takes its name directly from the "sea of clouds" (雲海) phenomenon famously visible here during seasonal weather changes, and in 1997 it absorbed Yong'an Elementary School as a branch campus.
雲海國小起源於1920年，最初為「石碇公學校小格頭分離教室」，位於北宜公路上的小格頭山村。校名直接取自此地在季節交替時節可見的著名「雲海」奇景，民國86年（1997年）更將永安國小併入，成為其分校。
