Founded to bring junior-high education to Yuanlin.
Yuanlin Junior High was founded in July 1962 as "Changhua County Yuanlin Junior High School," at the initiative of then–County Chief Lü Shiming, under first principal Wang Chengquan. Its earliest classes borrowed classrooms from a nearby elementary school while its own campus was under construction, which opened in 1963. In 1968, with the introduction of nine-year compulsory education nationwide, the school converted to full junior-high status. It later added gifted-education programs (1984) and special-education programs (1985), building a comprehensive offering for the city's students.
員林國中創校於民國51年（1962年）7月，是由時任縣長呂世明倡議設立的「彰化縣立員林初級中學」，首任校長為王承詮。創校初期借用鄰近國小教室上課，民國52年（1963年）自有校舍完工啟用。民國57年（1968年）隨九年國民義務教育實施，改制為國民中學。其後陸續設立資優教育班（1984年）與特殊教育班（1985年），逐步發展為服務員林市學子的綜合型國中。
