Yuanchang Junior High traces its origins to 1957, when it began as a branch of Beigang Junior High School across the county line in Chiayi. It became an independent school in 1961 and took its current name in 1968. Today it is the only junior high school serving all of Yuanchang Township, offering an art-talent class, a gifted-education track, and an English oral-fluency program that draw students from across the township's farming villages.
元長國中的歷史可追溯至民國46年（1957年），最初是嘉義縣北港國中的分校，於民國50年（1961年）獨立設校，並於民國57年（1968年）更為現名。如今是元長鄉唯一的國中，設有美術班、資優教育班，以及英語口語表達課程，吸引來自鄉內各農村的學子就讀。
