Identity & History ·

The breadbasket of Taiwan

Yunlin sits on Taiwan's central-western coastal plain, part of the great Chianan Plain that has long been the island's breadbasket. Its northern border is the Zhuoshui River (濁水溪), Taiwan's longest at about 203 km, whose floods over the centuries laid down rich black alluvial soil. That fertile soil — and abundant irrigation, greatly expanded after engineer Hatta Yoichi's 1920s waterworks — made Yunlin one of Taiwan's most important agricultural counties, leading the nation in farm output: rice, vegetables, garlic, peanuts and more.

Each town carries its own specialty. Xiluo (西螺) is Taiwan's soy-sauce capital, famous for naturally fermented black-bean sauce and prized Xiluo rice; Gukeng (古坑) in the eastern hills is celebrated as the cradle of Taiwanese coffee; and Yuanchang, Tuku and Dapi are known for garlic, peanuts and pickled mustard greens, while the coastal townships of Kouhu and Taixi raise oysters and clams.

Faith and trade run as deep here as farming. The town of Beigang (北港) grew up around the Beigang Chaotian Temple (北港朝天宮), founded in 1694 and one of Taiwan's premier Mazu temples. Douliu (斗六) is the county seat, while Huwei (虎尾) rose as a "sugar capital" around its 1906 refinery and is today honored as the hometown of Taiwan's glove-puppet theater (布袋戲). The 1952 Xiluo Bridge across the Zhuoshui — once among the longest in the Far East — became a postwar symbol of pride. Yunlin's truest identity is one of abundance and devotion: a granary that feeds the island, a heartland of Mazu faith, and the birthplace of a beloved puppet tradition.

Xiluo Bridge

A red-painted steel-truss bridge over the Zhuoshui River linking Yunlin and Changhua, completed in 1952 and opened in 1953. At 1,939 metres with 31 spans, it was then the longest bridge in the Far East and appeared on banknotes and stamps.

Beigang Daughter Bridge

Gukeng's hilly Huashan area is the cradle of Taiwanese coffee — the Japanese grew coffee here from the early 1900s. After the 1999 earthquake the industry revived, and the hills are now dotted with cafés and a tree-shaded green tunnel.

Caoling Geopark

A mountain resort in Gukeng known for dramatic earthquake-and-landslide geology. The 1999 quake created (and later drained) New Caoling Lake; the area has waterfalls, cliffs and trails — a "microcosm" of Taiwan's geology.

A hillside amusement park in Gukeng open since 1988, covering about 60 hectares. Its landmark is the 88-metre Sky Wheel Ferris wheel with views across the Chianan Plain, plus roller coasters and family rides.

Culture & Heritage ·

The goddess and the puppets

Yunlin's living culture rises from the incense of a great Mazu temple and the painted faces of a puppet stage.

🙏 Beigang Mazu faith ·

Beigang Chaotian Temple anchors one of Taiwan's great centers of Mazu worship. The Beigang Mazu procession (北港迎媽祖), on the 19th–20th of the third lunar month, is famous for two spectacles: the yige art floats — uniquely featuring real children dressed as folk-tale figures who toss candy to the crowds — and the massive firecracker barrages set off beneath the deity's palanquin. It is a designated National Important Folk Custom.

🎭 Glove-puppet theater ·

Huwei is the "hometown of budaixi." The towering figure is Huang Hai-tai (黃海岱), born in Xiluo in 1901, who renamed his family troupe Wuzhouyuan (五洲園) in 1929 and trained hundreds of puppeteers. His descendants founded Pili International Multimedia, turning traditional puppetry into a special-effects-laden TV and film phenomenon. Add Xiluo's sun-fermented soy sauce and Gukeng's coffee, and Yunlin's craft heritage is rich indeed.
