Shenkeng's first public school, still teaching from its history.

Shenkeng Elementary opened in 1899 as "Shenkeng Public School," during the Japanese colonial era, making it the first public elementary school in what is now Shenkeng District — its permanent classroom facilities were completed in 1903. History is written into its campus: a wooden school auditorium built in 1918, during the Taishō era, was registered as a New Taipei municipal historic building in 2007 and carefully restored in 2009. In recent years, the school converted an old basketball court into an artificial wetland, turning a piece of hardscape into a living outdoor classroom for environmental education.

A heritage-town anchor.

🏯

As Shenkeng's oldest school, its restored Taishō-era auditorium is a physical anchor of the same heritage-town identity that produced the district's renowned tofu Old Street (深坑老街) — where stone shophouses have sold stinky tofu and soy specialties for generations. See the New Taipei county page for more on the region.
