A remote school named for a mountain valley.
Mudan Elementary was proposed in 1940 and opened in 1941 as a branch classroom known as Wudankeng Field School, during the Japanese colonial era. Named for Mudan ("peony"), a small settlement along the Mudan (Wudankeng) valley near Shuangxi's rail line, the school reflects the area's sparse, mountainous mining-era geography. Today it is classified an official "remote" (偏遠) school, with only about 30 students.
