A school built by its own community.
Jianan Elementary opened in April 1961 as a branch of Dacheng Elementary School, becoming fully independent in 1963. The school was founded through the generosity of local philanthropists, who donated land and funds so children in the mountainous Ankeng hill community would not have to make the long walk into town to attend school. A kindergarten was added in 1996, and the school won the National Environmental Education Award in 2015.

A grassroots story from the Ankeng hills.
Located in the Ankeng hill community, the school's founding story reflects the grassroots community effort typical of Sanxia's outlying hamlets, back before improved roads eased travel into the main town. See the New Taipei county page for more on the region.
