Gengliao Elementary began in 1922 as a branch of Wugu Common School serving the Gengliao (更寮) settlement, becoming an independent school in 1946. In 1983, the school was forced to relocate when the government built the Erchong Floodway directly through its original village site — a direct consequence of Wugu's exposure to Taipei-basin flood-control engineering, given how much of the district sits on the low-lying floodplain of the Tamsui River system.
更寮國小於1922年（日治時期）設立為五股公學校更寮分班，民國35年（1946年）獨立設校。民國72年（1983年）因政府興建二重疏洪道，工程直接穿越原有聚落所在地，學校被迫遷校——這直接反映出五股地處淡水河系低窪氾濫平原，長期暴露於台北盆地防洪工程的影響之下。
