A miniature school for a mining-era community.

Dongshan Elementary School began in 1927 as a branch classroom of Xizhi Public School serving the Shikongzi (石硿子) area, established to educate the children of families who had moved into the district for coal mining during the Japanese colonial era. It became the independent Taipei County Dongshan Elementary School in 1946. Sitting on the mountain road connecting Xizhi to Pingxi, it is often called New Taipei's smallest or most miniature public elementary school, and a Japanese-era commemorative stone monument still stands near its gate.
