Zhongxiao Elementary School traces its founding to 1896, when it opened as "臺中國語傳習所" (Taichū Japanese Language Training Institute), during the very first years of Japanese colonial administration in Taiwan. Today it holds the distinction of being the oldest existing elementary school in Taichung City, with over a century of continuous operation spanning the colonial and postwar eras.

忠孝國小創校於1896年,初名「臺中國語傳習所」,正值日治初期。如今是台中市現存歷史最悠久的國小,橫跨日治與戰後時期,持續辦學超過一世紀。
