Wenguang Elementary was established in 1963 specifically to serve children in the outlying Doudi and Doutan areas of Shalu District, sparing them a long daily walk to more distant schools. The school opened as an independent institution from the start, taking its name from the Wenguang Lane location along Doutan Road where it still stands today.
文光國小創立於民國52年（1963年），設立目的是讓沙鹿斗底、斗潭地區的孩童不必長途跋涉前往較遠的學校就讀。學校自創校起即為獨立設校，校名取自今日校址所在的斗潭路文光巷。
