Guangming Junior High School was established in 1968 as "Taichung Municipal Ninth Junior High School," originally built beside neighboring Datong Elementary School. It took its current name, "光明" (Guangming), in 1972. As West District's population grew, overcrowding forced the school to relocate to a larger, more modern campus between 1996 and 1997, where it operates today.
光明國中創立於民國57年（1968年），初名「台中市立第九國民中學」，最初校舍建於大同國小旁。民國61年（1972年）更名為「光明」。隨著西區人口增長，因校舍擁擠不敷使用，學校於民國85至86年（1996–1997年）遷至現址的新校舍。
