Datong Elementary School was founded in 1899 as "臺中小學校" (Taichū Elementary School), during the early years of Japanese colonial rule, making it one of Taiwan's oldest continuously operating schools. In 2004, its front building was registered as a Taichung historic building — the only elementary campus in the local area with such a designation, a recognition of its architectural and historical significance.
