A name that measures history in plowshares.
Sizhangli Elementary traces its roots to 1933, when it opened as a branch classroom of 北屯公學校 (Beitun Public School) during the Japanese colonial era, becoming an independent school in 1940. It was renamed Jianren Elementary in 1970, but in 1999 the school restored its historic name — 四張犁, "four plows" — after a petition from local residents who wanted to preserve the area's original identity. Today it serves the Renhe, Simin, Tongrong, and Houzhuang neighborhoods of Beitun District.

🌾 A Name Measured in Plows
"Sizhangli" literally means "four plows" — a reference to the number of plows early Han settlers needed to work this stretch of reclaimed land, a naming convention that survives directly in the school's identity.
📜 Restored by Local Petition
After decades as Jianren Elementary, the school reverted to its original historic name in 1999 following a petition from local residents determined to keep the area's heritage alive.
The school began life in 1933 as a branch classroom of Beitun Public School, part of a wave of colonial-era education expansion, before gaining full independence in 1940.
🏘️ Anchoring Four Beitun Neighborhoods
Today the school draws students from the Renhe, Simin, Tongrong, and Houzhuang neighborhoods, continuing its long-standing role as a neighborhood anchor in northern Taichung.
A living record of land reclamation.
The school's name preserves a Qing-dynasty land-reclamation unit of measure, from an era when Han settlers first plowed this stretch of the Taichung Basin — one plow per roughly five jia of land, with four plows required for this particular tract. See the Taichung county page for more on the region.
