From a family ancestral hall to a rebuilt campus.
Shigang Elementary School traces its beginnings to 1899, when classes were first held in the Lin family ancestral hall, making it one of the oldest schools in the Dajia River valley. The school's campus was totally destroyed in the catastrophic 921 earthquake of 1999. It was rebuilt with sponsorship from the Tzu Chi Foundation and reopened in 2001, and today its post-earthquake reconstruction stands at the center of Shigang's modern identity as an earthquake-recovery and eco-tourism community.
