Qingtan Elementary opened in 1956 as a branch of Xindian Elementary, beginning as a satellite classroom before growing into an independent school. It takes its name from and sits near Qingtan (青潭), a scenic reservoir and dam area along the Xindian River, on the historic road toward Yilan.
青潭國小於民國45年（1956年）設立為新店國小分班，最初以衛星教室形式運作，其後獨立設校。校名源自並鄰近青潭——這是新店溪畔一處風景優美的水庫與攔河堰地區，位於通往宜蘭的歷史道路上。
