A mountain junior high, reinvented.
Pinglin Junior High opened in the late 1960s (1967–1968) to serve this mountain tea-growing township along the Beishi River. In 2021, the school entered a new era, becoming one of New Taipei City's first two publicly-run "KIST" (KIPP Inspired School in Taiwan) experimental junior highs, in partnership with the Chengzhi Education Foundation. Its curriculum is built around educator Nel Noddings' "ethics of care," and the school has built a lively co-curricular life — its taiko drum team and wind band have both won municipal-level honors.

💧 Care for Nature, Taught by the River
沿北勢溪的關懷倫理課程
Built on Nel Noddings' "ethics of care," the school's curriculum uses Pinglin's tea-covered hills and the Beishi River itself as a living classroom for environmental and social responsibility.
Pinglin, Taiwan's Pouchong tea heartland.
Pinglin District is Taiwan's Pouchong tea (包種茶) heartland, its hillsides terraced with tea gardens that have supplied the trade for generations, while the Beishi River (北勢溪) running through it also feeds the Feitsui Reservoir, one of greater Taipei's main water sources. The junior high's "care for nature" curriculum strand is taught directly through these hills and the river, tying the school's educational mission to the township's identity as a tea-and-water landscape. See the New Taipei county page for more on the region.
