Two universities, one shared name, six years in the making.

National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University was formally launched on February 1, 2021, through the merger of National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) — founded in Shanghai in 1896 and re-established in Hsinchu in 1958, historically strong in electronics and ICT — and National Yang-Ming University (NYMU) in Taipei, historically strong in biomedical sciences. The merger was years in the making: NCTU's council first approved the proposal in 2015, both schools agreed on the shared "Yang Ming Chiao Tung" name in September 2019, and the Ministry of Education approved the plan with a NT$400 million budget in June 2020, before the merged university formally began operating in 2021. Today NYCU spans multiple campuses across Hsinchu and Taipei plus a hospital in Yilan, organized into 19 colleges with 7 national laboratories and 75 research centers, and enrolls more than 20,000 students in total.

🤝 A Landmark 2021 Merger

NYCU was formed by uniting NCTU's semiconductor and ICT strength with NYMU's biomedical science expertise — a six-year process from initial 2015 proposal to the university's 2021 launch, and one of the most significant mergers in Taiwanese higher education history.

🔬 Nineteen Colleges, 75 Research Centers

The merged university now operates 19 colleges, 7 national laboratories, and 75 research centers — a scale and breadth few Taiwanese universities can match.

🏥 A Campus Network Spanning Three Cities

NYCU operates across multiple campuses in Hsinchu and Taipei, plus a hospital in Yilan, reflecting the combined geographic footprint of its two founding institutions.

💊 Semiconductors Meet Biomedicine

The merger is a flagship example of Taiwan's strategy to fuse biomedical research with semiconductor and ICT strength inside one institution, closely tied to the Hsinchu Science Park ecosystem.
