From Boxer Indemnity scholarships to Taiwan's tech corridor.
National Tsing Hua University's origins reach back to April 11, 1911, when it was founded in Beijing as Tsinghua College, funded through the return of Boxer Indemnity scholarship money. The university was re-established at its present Hsinchu location in 1956. Its main campus, along with the additional Nanda Campus, sits adjacent to the Hsinchu Science Park and near major research institutes including ITRI, the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center, and the National Center for High-Performance Computing. Today NTHU is organized into 12 colleges with 26 departments and 31 graduate institutes, offering more than 140 degree programs to roughly 18,000 students — about 9,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate students — supported by around 3,000 faculty.
