From a provincial junior college to a national university.
National Formosa University (NFU) traces its founding to 1980 as Provincial Yunlin Industrial Junior College. It was nationalized in 1981, upgraded to an institute of technology in 1997, and became a full university between 2004 and 2005. Located in Huwei Town, NFU is organized into four colleges — Engineering; Electrical & Computer Engineering/Information; Management; and Applied Arts and Sciences — and today serves about 11,000 students, including those in continuing education.
國立虎尾科技大學創校於民國69年（1980年），前身為省立雲林工業專科學校。民國70年（1981年）改隸國立，民國86年（1997年）改制為技術學院，並於民國93至94年（2004至2005年）間改制為大學。校址位於虎尾鎮，設有工程、電機資訊、管理、應用科學等四大學院，現有含進修部在內學生約1萬1千人。

Huwei's identity was built on the sugar industry — home to the historic Huwei Sugar Refinery — and NFU has grown alongside the town as an engineering and technical-training institution serving the industrial and agricultural base of the old sugar-producing region.
