Nanzhen Elementary was established in 1949 and celebrated its 70th anniversary around 2018, serving generations of children in Nanzhen Village, Tianwei Township. The school has built a strong reputation for reading education, earning the Ministry of Education's national "Reading Rock" Award, while also excelling in music and sport — its recorder ensemble has won the county championship eight years running, and its sixth-graders have taken county titles in soft korfball.

The school takes its name from Nanzhen Village 南鎮村, whose name comes from lying south ("南") of the old settlement of Zhenping — first settled by Hakka and Hoklo migrants from Guangdong and Fujian during the late Ming and early Qing era. See the Changhua county page for more on the region.
