Nanhua Junior High began in 1979 as "南寮澳分部," a branch campus of Guanghua Junior High serving the coastal Nanliao area. It became a fully independent school, "新竹市立南華國民中學," in August 1983. The school sits near Hsinchu's coastline, giving it a distinct identity within North District's cluster of schools.
南華國中的前身為民國68年（1979年）設立的光華國中「南寮澳分部」，服務新竹沿海的南寮地區。民國72年（1983年）8月正式獨立設校，定名為「新竹市立南華國民中學」。學校鄰近新竹海岸，在北區學校群中具有獨特的地理定位。
