A century-old school named for the old south settlement.
Nanguo Elementary traces its history to 1919, when it opened as "Changhua Second Public School" under Japanese colonial rule. It was renamed "Nanguo Public School" in 1921 and went through several further name changes across the colonial and post-war periods, before taking its current name in 1968 with the start of nine-year compulsory education in Taiwan. Today it is the largest elementary school in Changhua City, with about 89 classes and 2,500 students, and it operates its own school observatory for astronomy education.
