Nanguang Elementary traces its origin to 1955, when it began as the "Huliao Branch" after local villager Tsai Hsi funded the purchase of land for a new school. The branch became fully independent in 1956, giving the community of Nanguang Village its own elementary school rather than requiring children to travel elsewhere.
南光國小的歷史可追溯至民國44年（1955年），最初以「湖寮分班」之名成立，由地方仕紳蔡溪出資購地興學。該分班於民國45年（1956年）正式獨立設校，讓南光村的孩童擁有自己的小學，不必再遠赴他處求學。
