Minyi Elementary began in 1964 as a branch campus of Dapu Elementary School, becoming independent in 1969. In 1997 the school renamed its student-activity program "民義學園," and it opened a kindergarten in 1999. In 2007 the school was recognized as a national featured/specialty small school, reflecting its distinctive approach to serving a small mountain community.
民義國小於民國53年（1964年）以大埔國小分校形式成立，民國58年（1969年）獨立設校。民國86年（1997年）將學生活動課程更名為「民義學園」，民國88年（1999年）增設幼兒園。學校於民國96年（2007年）獲選為全國特色小學，展現其服務小型山區社區的獨特辦學方式。
