From a sugar-factory boomtown to a small country school.
Longyan Elementary was founded in January 1936 to serve families connected to the nearby Longyan Sugar Factory, which had opened the previous year. During the sugar-factory boom, the school once enrolled over 2,000 students — but as the industry declined, so did enrollment, dropping to about 42 students by 2021. Today the school keeps a piece of that heritage alive through its traditional "flower drum formation" (花鼓陣) dance.

Enrollment fell to about 42 students by 2021 as the sugar industry declined — a vivid illustration of how Taiwan's rural economy has shifted over a century.
Baozhong, home of Yunlin's pickled mustard greens.
Born from a Japanese-era sugar factory settlement, Longyan Elementary now sits amid the rice and garlic fields that have replaced Baozhong's vanished sugar industry. The township remains best known today for its suan cai (pickled mustard greens) production. See the Yunlin county page for more on the region.
