One of Taiwan's last four "substitute public" schools.
Yuan Ming Junior High opened in 1968 as Linnei Township's designated "substitute public junior high" (代用國中) — part of a nationwide effort that established roughly 100 such schools that year to extend compulsory education into areas without full public infrastructure. Today, Yuan Ming is one of only four of these substitute public junior highs still operating anywhere in Taiwan. The school draws students from a wide catchment area reaching into Lugu, Shuili, and Xinyi, and maintains dormitory facilities to house students who travel from these more distant mountain districts.

🏫 One of Taiwan's Last Four "Substitute" Schools
全台僅存代用國中之一
Of roughly 100 "substitute public junior highs" established nationwide in 1968, Yuan Ming is one of only four still operating in Taiwan today.
🗺️ A Catchment Spanning Three Townships
橫跨三鄉鎮的招生範圍
The school draws students from a wide area including Lugu, Shuili, and Xinyi, well beyond Linnei Township itself, reflecting its role serving a broader mountain region.
🛏️ Dormitories for Distant Students
服務遠地學生的宿舍
Because many students travel from distant mountain districts, the school maintains dormitory facilities so they can live on campus during the school term.
Linnei, land of sugar, bamboo, and heritage.
As Linnei Township's designated substitute junior high, Yuan Ming has served the area's compulsory-education needs since 1968, in a district historically shaped by the Lin Nei Sugar Refinery (林內糖廠) and known today for its bamboo forest and the Wu Family Mansion (林內濟公廟/吳氏宗祠). See the Yunlin county page for more on the region.
