From factory school to public institution.
Leye Elementary School was founded in 1947 as "Taichung City Private Sugar Factory National School" (臺中市私立糖廠國校), established directly by the Taichung Sugar Factory to educate the children of its employees. The school remained under the sugar factory's operation for two decades before the Taichung city government took it over in 1968, converting it into a full public school. Its origins stand as a direct legacy of the Japanese-era sugar industry that once anchored East District's economy.
