Rebuilt after the 921 earthquake.
Jungong Elementary began in 1920 as Jungongliao Public School during the Japanese colonial era, taking its current name in 1969. The school's history took a dramatic turn in 1999, when the devastating 921 earthquake completely destroyed its campus; students were relocated temporarily while a new campus was built, reopening in 2001. Remarkably, a Japanese-era teacher's dormitory on the grounds survived and has since been registered as a Taichung historic building.

A colonial-era teacher's dormitory still stands on campus, one of the few physical remnants of the school's founding decades, and is officially registered as a Taichung historic building.
🌏 Rebuilt After 921
921大地震後重建
The 1999 921 earthquake completely destroyed the original campus, forcing a temporary relocation before a rebuilt school reopened in 2001 — a dramatic chapter in the school's century-long story.
🏫 A Century Under Three Names
近百年校名沿革
From its 1920 founding as Jungongliao Public School to its current name adopted in 1969, the school's naming history spans the colonial era through to modern Taichung.
A physical record of two eras.
The surviving Japanese-era teacher's dormitory and the school's dramatic 921-earthquake rebuilding make it a physical record of both Beitun's colonial past and Taiwan's most significant modern natural disaster. See the Taichung county page for more on the region.
