Taiwan's second Amis experimental school.

Hegang Elementary began in 1948 as a branch of Ruimei Elementary, becoming independent in 1954 and taking its current name in 1968. Its history includes a small "Anye" branch class that ran from 1957 to 1975 before closing, and a period from 1989 to 1992 when it absorbed Qimei Elementary as its own branch campus — a role later reversed when Qimei's villagers won back their independence. Most significantly, Hegang has since transformed into the "Xiuguluan Amis Experimental Elementary School," becoming Taiwan's second Amis Indigenous experimental school, following the earlier example set by Fengbin Elementary.

Following the trail blazed by Fengbin Elementary, Hegang transformed into the "Xiuguluan Amis Experimental Elementary School," building its curriculum around Amis culture and language along the Xiuguluan River basin.

🔗 A Shared History With Qimei

Between 1989 and 1992, Hegang temporarily absorbed neighboring Qimei Elementary as a branch campus — a chapter of shared history before Qimei's villagers successfully restored their own school's independence.

🌊

Located in the Olaw Amis community along the Xiuguluan River basin, the school is now a dedicated Amis-culture experimental school reflecting the river's deep Indigenous heritage — part of a growing movement across Hualien's Amis communities, alongside Fengbin Elementary and Tafalong Elementary, to root education directly in Indigenous language and culture.
