A school named for the sun, designed to play.
Yangguang Elementary's land was approved in 1998, and its preparatory office chose the name "Yangguang" (陽光, meaning "sunlight") in March 1999; the campus opened in April 2004. It was designed by Columbia University-trained architect Lin Zhi-cheng, who incorporated preserved traditional farm buildings into the campus as teaching spaces. The school is known for a striking architectural feature: seven slides descending 15 meters from the second floor. In 2004, it received the Ministry of Education's "Benchmark 100" award for its implementation of the Nine-Year Integrated Curriculum, and held its first graduation ceremony in 2006, with 170 graduates.

The school received the Ministry of Education's "Benchmark 100" award in 2004 for its implementation of the Nine-Year Integrated Curriculum.
Where old farmhouses became a schoolyard.
Yangguang Elementary's campus design preserved traditional local farm buildings as teaching spaces rather than clearing them away — a rare choice that keeps a physical trace of the area's agricultural past inside the school itself. See the Hsinchu City county page for more on the region.
