Born from Banqiao's population boom.
Guoguang Elementary opened on 25 August 1978, splitting off from the century-old Banqiao Elementary School as the district's population swelled and a new neighborhood school became necessary. Today it runs an attached kindergarten alongside its primary classes and serves the families of central Banqiao.
國光國小創校於民國67年（1978年）8月25日，由歷史悠久的板橋國小分設而出，因應板橋人口快速成長、學區亟需新設學校而誕生。現設有附設幼兒園，服務板橋市中心一帶的學童與家庭。

Guoguang's 1978 founding traces directly to Banqiao's rapid mid-20th-century shift from a satellite town on Taipei's edge into a dense residential district — a period when the original 枋橋 (Banqiao) core split off school after school to keep pace with new neighborhoods.
