Xinguang Elementary exists because of a very concrete problem: children in this remote corner of Gukeng Township once had to walk barefoot long distances to reach Donghe Elementary School, with no bridge to cross the river along the way. Classes first began informally out of a village meeting hall in 1952, and the school moved to its current site in 1984. Today it remains a small rural school, with roughly 23 students — a testament to its origins as a solution built by and for a tightly-knit mountain community.
新光國小的誕生源自一個非常實際的問題：這處古坑鄉偏遠角落的孩童，過去必須赤腳跋涉長路才能抵達東和國小，途中甚至沒有橋樑可供渡河。1952年，村里活動中心先以非正式方式開班授課，1984年學校遷至現址。如今，學校仍是一所小型鄉村學校，僅約23名學生——見證了這所學校因應山區社區需求而誕生的初衷。
