From near-closure to national recognition.
Huanan Experimental Elementary began as a branch school in 1960, became independent in 1962, and took its current name in 1968. The school once faced near-closure due to rural depopulation, with enrollment shrinking to just 23 students. That changed under principal Chen Ching-chuan, who led the school from 2006 to 2019: enrollment quadrupled, and Huanan became one of Taiwan's "Top 10 Classic Specialty Elementary Schools." Central to that turnaround was an "unbounded learning" curriculum that reconnects students directly with local coffee farming, tea culture, and terraced-field agriculture.
