Guangwu Junior High School was founded in March 1960 in what was then Hsinchu County, under the name "新竹縣立第三初級中學" (Hsinchu County Third Junior High School). On November 24, 1962, the school relocated to its current site on Guangfu Road and was renamed "光武國中" — a date now celebrated each year as the school's anniversary. The school is currently undergoing a 2024-2026 campus renewal project that includes a new teaching building and kitchen facilities, continuing its long-standing service to the East District community.
光武國中創校於1960年（民國49年）3月，當時位於新竹縣境內，校名為「新竹縣立第三初級中學」。1962年11月24日，學校遷至現址光復路校地，並改名為「光武國中」——這個日期至今仍作為學校每年校慶紀念日。學校目前正進行2024至2026年的校園整建工程，包括新建教學大樓與廚房設施，持續服務東區社區逾一甲子。
