光隆國小的歷史可追溯至日治時期昭和5年（1930年），最初以「大平公學校籠埔分校」之名設立，於民國31年（1942年）獨立為「車籠埔國民學校」。民國57年（1968年）更名為光隆國小，後因921大地震嚴重受損而遷址重建。其舊名「車籠埔」，正是與921大地震震央所在的車籠埔斷層直接相關的地名。
