A pocket of Hakka heritage in Hoklo country.

Laihui Elementary was founded in 1962 and has grown into one of the few schools in Yunlin County designated a Hakka Language Living School by the Executive Yuan Council of Hakka Affairs. The school is known for preserving Hakka culture and promoting Hakka-language puppet theater, and around 2022 it marked nearly 60 years of history while its campus underwent rebuilding. Its Hakka-heritage designation stands out in Erlun Township, an area otherwise dominated by Zhang-Zhou Hoklo settlement.

A Hakka pocket within a Hoklo township.

🏵️

Notably, Laihui breaks the township's dominant Hoklo pattern as a designated Hakka-heritage school, reflecting pockets of Hakka settlement within Erlun's broader Zhang-Zhou farming community. This makes it a rare touchpoint of Hakka language and tradition amid a township otherwise defined by its Hoklo garlic and rice farming culture. See the Yunlin county page for more on the region.
