One of Hsinchu's original century schools.

Dongmen Elementary was founded on October 1, 1897, at the old Mingzhi Academy site, originally established as a school for the children of Japanese settlers. It was renamed Hsinchu Ordinary Higher Elementary School in 1902 and relocated in 1914 to its present site just outside the city's East Gate — the landmark from which the school takes its name. It became Hsinchu County Hsinchu City Public Dongmen School in 1950, and took its current name, Hsinchu City Dongmen Elementary School, in 1982. With over 125 years of history, it stands among Hsinchu's oldest "century schools" (百年老校).
