Founded by Taiwanese gentry, for Taiwanese students.
Taichung First Senior High School was founded in 1915 through the collective effort of prominent Taiwanese Han gentry families, who petitioned and raised funds by public subscription to establish the first secondary school in Taiwan built specifically to educate Taiwanese students under Japanese colonial rule — at a time when secondary education was otherwise reserved mainly for the children of Japanese settlers. Known island-wide simply as "Taichung First" (台中一中), the school has grown over more than a century into Taiwan's single most prestigious public boys' senior high school. Its long-standing presence has also given its name to the bustling "Yizhong Shopping District" (一中商圈) that surrounds the campus today.
