About · 學校簡介

Built as the historic counterpart across town.

Taichung Second Senior High School was established in 1922 as "Taichung Prefecture Taichung Second Middle School" (臺中州立臺中第二中學校), created under Japanese colonial rule specifically to educate the children of Japanese settlers in the Taichung area — a segregated counterpart to the nearby school founded seven years earlier by Taiwanese gentry to serve Taiwanese students. After Taiwan's retrocession in 1945, the school was reorganized, and in the postwar decades it merged with a parallel girls' school, evolving into today's coeducational public senior high in the heart of North District.

A mirror of colonial-era Taichung.

🏯

Taichung Second's origins as a school built exclusively for Japanese settlers' children — in deliberate contrast to the Taiwanese-founded school nearby — offers a vivid window into the ethnically segregated education policy of Japanese-era Taichung, a history that still shapes North District's identity as the city's original administrative and educational core. See the Taichung county page for more on the region.
