A new name, and a curriculum reborn.
The school's roots go back to 1917, when Japanese colonial authorities established the "Limaoan Aboriginal Children's Education Institute" to serve this remote Atayal mountain valley. It became Fushan Elementary School in 1968, and on September 1, 2021, it was renamed and relaunched as Délanan Indigenous Experimental Elementary School — New Taipei City's first Indigenous experimental school. Today it is a tiny school of about seven classes, the only Indigenous-homeland elementary school in the greater Taipei metropolitan area, with a curriculum built around Atayal weaving, hunting-culture knowledge, ecology, and traditional crafts. Working with National Chengchi University, the school built a traditional Atayal house (家屋) demonstration area on campus.

🏛️ A New Name, Reclaiming History
On September 1, 2021, the school renamed itself Délanan — its Atayal name — becoming New Taipei's first Indigenous experimental school and reclaiming a name rooted in local legend for its own classrooms.
🧶 Weaving and Hunting-Culture Knowledge
The curriculum centers on Atayal weaving, traditional hunting-culture knowledge, ecology, and traditional crafts — taught as living skills, not just history lessons.
🏠 A Traditional House, Built With a University
Partnering with National Chengchi University, the school built a traditional Atayal house (家屋) demonstration area on campus, giving students a hands-on connection to traditional architecture.
🏔️ The Only School of Its Kind Near Taipei
With only about seven classes, this tiny school is the sole Indigenous-homeland elementary school in the entire greater Taipei metropolitan area.
A valley legend, reclaimed for the classroom.
The school's Atayal name, Délanan (also written Tranan), is the traditional name for the Fushan valley itself. According to local oral history, Atayal hunters who first came upon the valley's fish-rich river and abundant forests are said to have exclaimed "Tranan!" — roughly, "wow, what abundance!" — and the name has been passed down as a legend ever since. The school's 2021 renaming was a deliberate act of reclaiming that founding story for the classroom, tying today's Indigenous-experimental curriculum directly to the valley's own oral history. See the New Taipei county page for more on the region.
